Valentina Acosta Giraldo: A Young Champion!

But before she went to Spain and won the gold, she was at a crossroads in her life two years ago, trying to figure out where she was and which path she wanted to pursue to get where she wanted to be. She had just turned 17 when she finished high school, and at that point, she was evaluating her life and considering her options. Valentina was in a difficult position since she had to choose between devoting her full time to the sport, dividing her time between training and her education, or concentrating only on her academics.

When she decided to pursue Archery as a career, her parents were there to support and guide her through every life stage, instilling in her the values of dedication and perseverance from an extremely young age. She said lots of people were unhappy with the decisions she had chosen but that her parents and other loved ones were always there to protect her and keep her sheltered from the harsh facts of the outside world as she pursued her goal of becoming an expert in the profession of her choosing. Her parents encouraged her to “Do what makes you happy and what you love,” and she always listened to their advice.

After the victory in Madrid, she was eager to express her gratitude to her family, which is one reason why. Her parents got to witness her perform on an international platform for the first time, and they stood up with pride when the Colombian national song was the only sound coming from the Madrid speakers after winning. Her hard work paid off in a huge way on the world scene.

At this point, Valentina focused on the activities that brought her the greatest joy, prioritising her participation in athletics over her education in academic subjects. She started shooting arrows, and before long, she was competing on an international level and making history.

The routine that Valentina Acosta Giraldo follows during her everyday workouts

Every day, she would get up early, and by eight in the morning, she would get everything ready for the training that would take place at the camp. Before she traveled to the World Championship, her training was ramped up to two times a day, and when the statement was made in Madrid, all of the hard work and preparation paid off hugely. The training lasted for four hours, and there were different levels of difficulty involved in each of those hours.

To reach the final, Valentina had to compete against archers from France, Korea, and Germany. In the last round, she faced off against Ana Paula Vasquez, representing Mexico in the competition. In the championship match, she got off to a strong start with two tens and one nine, and after winning the first set, she never let her opponent get closer than one set.

Valentina Acosta Giraldo stated the following when she was awarded the gold medal: “I do not recall much what I felt; I was in another universe; I thought, I will not have any more nerves, I can relax, and I can be a human again.” I got the need to get some fresh air and then phone my folks to check if they had seen me.

Now, she has set her target on the Olympics, and if her intention is as clear as it was at the finals in Madrid, then we will soon be able to see a skilled archer from Japan compete against the finest archers from across the globe.
